Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music at assigned campus.  Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular orchestra activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and district requirements.  Plan and administer orchestra activities in accordance with campus and district expectations.  Plan and prepare to provide students the opportunity to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certificate
  • ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Know curriculum/instruction and the overall operation of instrumental music program
  • Know state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing orchestra activities
  • Able to manage budget, personnel and student behavior
  • Able to instruct students and interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

 

  • Minimum of two (2) years teaching and orchestra directing experience preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Instructional Strategies

  • Direct middle school or high school instrumental performers, including beginning classes, all large performance ensembles, soloists, and small ensembles.
  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in orchestra.
  • Provide for participation at community and extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, UIL, and TMEA activities.
  • Arrange transportation for all events taking place off campus.
  • Recommend policies to improve program.
  • Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Accompany and supervise on all trips.
  • Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Actively participate in District music events.

 

Student Growth and Development

  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and to ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support mission of the school district.

 

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips activities and arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

 

Policy, Reports and Law

  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, TMEA rules, and local school board policy in the orchestra area.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • The employee is expected to adhere to district employee/department/campus handbooks, board policies, AISD procedures, the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics and all applicable laws.

 

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Work to provide campus, District, and community awareness of orchestra activities and performances.
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

 

Budget and Inventory

  • Support booster club activities, if applicable.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.

  • Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
  • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.
  • Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all instruments and equipment.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

 

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the orchestra area.

 

Personnel Management

  • Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within orchestra program.

 

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of teachers, the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), and the extracurricular assignment evaluation.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

Probationary contract - 197 Days plus 4 days of Alief U professional develpment for a teacher new to the district

2023-2024 Salary Schedule

2024-2025 Salary Schedule is pending board approval
