Primary Purpose:

To provide direct and/or consultative special education services relating to visual impairments.  These services enable the students to learn in classroom and community environments.  Services for infants may be provided in the infants’ homes or child-care settings (within district boundaries).

Qualifications:                                                              

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university
  • Texas certification standards required for assignment as set by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) for teachers of students with visual impairments
  • ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year

 

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Able to perform functional vision and learning media assessments
  • Able to interpret medical eye reports as related to educational environments
  • Able to modify statewide testing when appropriate
  • Able to provide screening and referral procedures to appropriate personnel
  • Able to obtain and administer modified standardized testing materials
  • Able to work with other agencies in vocational assessment processes
  • Able to assist other team members with assistive technology, especially computer-based

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Management

  • Assist professionals in developing appropriate evaluation and assessment strategies.
  • Provide direct instruction to students in order to support their effective use of all equipment or educationally necessary assistive technology.
  • Evaluate student progress, document and provide progress notes as per district policy.
  • Make instructional modifications as appropriate, and recommend changes as necessary to students’ ARD/IFSPs committees to ensure student success/progress.
  • Administer or assist in administering other tests/assessments as appropriate.
  • Direct instruction in visual efficiency, communication, Braille, assistive technology, auditory skills, social skills, use of near and low vision devices. Recommend appropriate specialized evaluations as needed, such as low vision, orientation and mobility, and adaptive physical education.
  • Recommend modified standardized testing materials (e.g., STAAR in Braille or large print), appropriate test/assessment accommodations, and administer or assist in the administration of tests as needed.
  • Work as a liaison with other agencies in the vocational assessment process.
  • Support parents of infants, toddlers and preschoolers as they help their children reach developmental milestones with adapted strategies specific to needs related to the visual impairment (services may be in the home, at an early intervention program, or in the community).
  • Provide support to students to facilitate development of self-esteem, self-determination, and social acceptance.

 

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations for Professional Non-Supervisor Personnel..

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
