Primary Purpose:
Operate school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned route and to and from other designated locations.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Valid Class B - CDL Drivers’ License with “P” and “S” endorsements
- Must successfully complete TEA School Bus Driver certification class
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must submit to prescribed DOT drug testing program
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
- Must be insurable under fleet policy restrictions
- Must have an annual physical examination
- Able to perform occasional physical labor
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions
- Able to use maps and other systems to follow routes and locate addresses
- Able to manage student behavior
- Able to communicate effectively with others
- Able to operate the bus

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation
- Operate the vehicle in a safe, efficient manner while following the assigned route, exactly as written and adhering to established schedules.
- Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs. Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports.
Student Management
- Communicate with the schools, students and community in a positive manner as to encourage their cooperation and respect.
- Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situations warrants.
- Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students. Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student’s behavior when warranted.
- Help students with disabilities get on and off bus according to their individual needs.
Safety
- Attend safety, certification and defensive driving courses as required.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
- Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.
Reports and Correspondence
- Cooperate with staff personnel by providing all paperwork required; such as registers and reports regarding students and vehicles.
- Provide written reports and discuss with supervisors all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries and student behavior.
- Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports.
Other
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding; regular grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent quick movements in small areas
Lifting: Frequent moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-50 pounds)
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery, hard or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
