Primary Purpose:

Assist in administering a food service program that provides students and staff with nutritious food at a reasonable price in an atmosphere with high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety. Assist in administering an environmentally friendly recycling program for the district.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition specific or related major (food management, business management, etc) or Bachelor’s degree in any major and at least 5 years of supervisory experience in Nutrition Programs.
  • Required 8 hours of food safety training prior to employment or within 30 calendar days of employment.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of menu planning, food purchasing, and preparation of foods in food service environment
  • Ability to conduct on-site inspections of food service facilities districtwide
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel as well as implement policy and procedures
  • Must be mentally alert and avoid situations that could cause harm to other employees in a dangerous environment.
  • Strong technology literacy skills (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools, etc.)
  • Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

  • Must meet minimum educational and experience background, per USDA regulations
  • Five (5) years’ experience in food service management & purchasing of food/equipment required
  • Commercial experience in catering preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Leadership

  • Assist in all operations of the nutrition department.
  • Project long-range goals to increase efficiency of the department.
  • Assist Wellness Supervisor with Wellness Program as required by TDA.
  • Assist in analyzing operations to improve the efficiency of the department.
  • Make recommendations for equipment and design specifications, preliminary drawings, and schematics for new/renovated facilities.
  • Participate in administrative team and actively support and pursue district goals.

Recycling Operations

  • Establish goals and plan for efficient implementation of the district recycling program.

Food Service Operations

  • Direct and manage district child nutrition programs.
  • Coordinate the implementation of operational procedures relative to the procurement and distribution of food/supplies, food production, standardization of quality and quantity, merchandising, and service.
  • Review menus to ensure established nutritional requirements for students have been met and include, when feasible, the food preferences of students and families.
  • Oversee operational aspects of Special Meals Programs: Summer School, OEY, and After-school Snack Program.
  • Collaborate in planning and providing special events/caterings for students and staff.
  • Oversee the warehousing operation to insure compliance with USDA and Health Department regulations and maximize efficiency of the operation.
  • Review new products and oversee testing, evaluation and marketing of new products and recipes.

Budget and Inventory

  • Assist in developing and administering budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed appropriately.
  • Assist with cost-effective and efficient food procurement and inventory system that meets both federal and Texas Education Agency (TEA) standards.
  • Assist with the evaluation of formal bids and make recommendations for the awarding of contracts for school board approval.
  • Develop/implement inventory and stock control program for equipment and supplies and recommend replacement and disposal of obsolete equipment as necessary.
  • Analyze financial reports regularly and implement change as necessary for the sound financial management of the department.

Policy, Reports, and Law

  • Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
  • Ensure compliance with USDA/TDA regulations, including:
    • Menu and service that meets nutrient, quality, and portion control standards
    • Efficient use of commodities, storage, and distribution of food, supplies and
  • Ensure health department and HACCP guidelines are enforced.
  • Assist in compiling, maintaining, & filing reports, records, & other required documents.
  • Ensure employee time records have required approvals & are submitted by deadlines.
  • Assist Director in preparing policies and procedures for the department.

Personnel Management

  • Direct and manage more than 400 staff members at more than 45
  • Develop training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation in the food service area.
  • Oversee all personnel activities (including: hiring, training & performance evaluations.)

Safety

  • Ensure that measures are in place and operating to protect food, supplies, and equipment in school cafeterias and warehouse.
  • Ensure all facilities meet established standards of safety and sanitation.
  • Maintain safety standards that conform to federal, state, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.
  • Organize and conduct training programs to promote safe food handling and a safe work environment.

 

Other

  • Must obtain minimum required annual Professional Standard training hours, per USDA regulations.
  • Must attend required training, in-service and work related activities.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

Supervise and evaluate the Nutrition and Recycling Departments.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Professional Supervisor Personnel.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

 

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals; district vehicle, large and small kitchen equipment

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds), if over 20 pounds must have assistance.

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress
