Primary Purpose:

To assist teachers of students with Visual Impairments provide students with instructional/support materials in Braille, Tactile Graphics and other adapted materials.

Qualifications:                                                              

 

Education/Certification:

  • High School graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Knowledge of Windows and/or computer operating system
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate understanding of braille
  • Eligible for appropriate paraprofessional certification

 

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and demonstrate an understanding of Braille in accordance with National Library Service standards
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication
  • Demonstrate interest in and aptitude for work to be performed
  • Excellent keyboarding skills; able to type at a minimum of 50 wpm
  • Prior experience and skills in using Microsoft Word, scanners, and Braille production software/equipment

 

Experience:

  • Some experience working with Braille and Tactual Materials

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Management

  • Create Braille classroom materials for the current and upcoming years, using the appropriate Braille and tactile graphics formats, including, but not limited to: textbooks for all subjects; teacher-made materials; pictorial layouts; math and science notations; workbooks for all subjects; tactile maps; music notation; and foreign languages.
  • Maintain inventory for the Visual Impaired (VI) department and transcribe digital documents; Braille and tactile graphic documents, and Library of Braille (tactual) materials.
  • Manage time so as to complete transcriptions as they are needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and saved digital documents/files of all transcriptions.
  • Create adapted materials utilizing a variety of techniques, including recorded texts, tactile graphics, and Braille. Locate and obtain Braille books for students and coordinate delivery of Braille (or other tactual) materials to the appropriate schools.
  • Order and maintain the supply of office products, material; repair and order equipment.
  • Attend workshops/seminars for continuous upgrading of services and equipment. Participate in professional development opportunities to advance braille skills beyond basic levels.  This includes participation in the Braille program offered by National Library Service through the National Federation of the Blind or on-line Braille courses offered by Hadley School for the Blind.
  • Carry out Braille basic formatting for literary, foreign language, music, and Nemeth codes, according to the guidance provided by TVI to accommodate Braille reading ability of students.
  • Comply with district, state and federal laws/policies re: confidentiality of student information.
  • Assure security of assessments to be transcribed, received in advance of test administration.

 

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Instructional Paraprofessional Personnel.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

 

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide or in-state travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
