Primary Purpose:
To provide supplementary sheltered instruction to Emergent Bilingual students (EBs) in English oral language development and in English literacy development. Provide campus leadership (coaching and modeling) in the sheltered instruction for EB students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or college
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification including bilingual or ESL certification
- Texas Reading Academy Certificate (Grades K-3)
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of English language development and literacy development
- Trained in SIOP (3 Day), Reading Academy and in ESL adopted textbook
- Effective oral and written communication skills in English
- Ability to build and maintain productive relationships among colleagues
- Knowledge of district’s Dual Language and ESL programs
- Bilingual preferred
Experience:
- Three (3) years’ classroom teaching experience as a Reading teacher of EBs
- Multiple grade level experience preferred
- Instructional leadership skills and experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Management
- Monitor progress of English development in Emergent Bilinguals (EBs).
- Work with classroom bilingual/ESL teachers to identify students needing intervention. (Newcomers, Refugees, Long Term EB students)
- Provide supplementary instruction in English oracy and literacy development to EBs who are struggling (in addition to classroom first-line instruction).
- Partner with bilingual/ESL teachers for planning, modeling, and implementing ELD and sheltered instruction.
- Partner with ESL Specialist to align district and campus goals as well as provide campus and district training.
- Coordinate efforts with EBs Instructional Paraprofessional to identify EBs needing supplementary instruction/intervention (bilingual campuses only).
- Attend LPAC meetings and share progress monitoring data for students receiving ELD services
- Attend district ESL/ELD meetings.
- Attend ARD meetings of EBs participating in Special Education.
- Assist with EBs registration, assessments, documentation and TELPAS preparations and administrations
Communication
- Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community members.
- Use effective public relations skills necessary for the successful implementation of new programs, the coordination of programs, and to maintain productive relationships among colleagues.
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Teachers and the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS).

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
