Primary Purpose:
Assist with the day-to-day operation and oversee the training and placement of the School Crossing Guards.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Valid Class C driver’s license
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Able to provide leadership and direct supervision to Crossing Guards
- Basic knowledge of traffic safety regulations
- Ability to identify and respond quickly to traffic safety hazards
- Ability to promote and sustain positive interaction with students, staff and the public
- Ability to communicate instructions effectively to both children and adults
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions
- Willing to work outdoors on every school day, no matter the weather
- Able to respond as a leader in situations requiring the use of sound judgment and decisive actions
- Have a strong customer service philosophy as a means of fostering a balance and sustainable community
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) consecutive years as an AISD Crossing Guard
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist children and other community members to safely cross the street at assigned intersections during designated hours without undue delay for vehicle traffic.
- Manage heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
- Manage large groups and unruly children.
- Identify potential traffic safety hazards and respond quickly to protect children and avoid incidents.
- Ensure a smooth and expedient flow of both vehicular and foot traffic.
- Follow and uphold district safety requirements and report traffic violations and student misconduct in accordance with district procedures.
- Communicate safety and traffic rules to students and parents as needed.
- Correct unsafe conditions when possible and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor as soon as practicable.
- Assist buses in providing a safe entrance and exit to and from schools onto city streets.
- Supply counts and reports as requested.
- Report any person loitering in vicinity of or interfering with a guard/controller.
Leadership
- Perform surveys regarding requests for new locations to determine the need for new locations, as well as justify the present locations.
- Assist the Child Safety Coordinator in observing the day-to-day operation of the Child Safety Program.
- Distribute uniforms and safety equipment to the school crossing guards.
- Provide written or oral reports to the Coordinator as required.
- Provide attendance verification for the coordinator to determine accurate payroll reporting for the crossing guards.
Other
- Substitute for absent crossing guards as needed.
- Has the ability to perform the job with little or no supervision.
- Keep equipment in good condition.
- Adhere to district as well as departmental policies and dress code.
- Use stop sign and whistle at all times when directing traffic and/or children.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Manual Trades – Security Personnel.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Handheld traffic signs, traffic cones, reflective safety attire, security equipment, and other security equipment, fire extinguisher, and standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing
Motion: Strenuous walking and climbing; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent driving
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (15 - 44 pounds)
Environment: Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather). Frequent districtwide travel
Other: Specific hearing and visual requirements. May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions. Ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; prolonged hours; on call 24 hours a day.
