Primary Purpose:
Assist head custodian in supervising, training, and inspecting custodial activities of staff. Ensure a clean, sanitary and hazard-free school and/or facility.

Experience:
- Experience in procedures, chemicals, tools and equipment utilized in the custodial and housekeeping functions.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Custodial Services Operations
- Complete work in a neat, orderly and safe manner.
- Follow established policies and procedures.
- Maintain good attendance and safety records.
- Implement directions received from supervisors.
- Demonstrate honesty in all facets of work.
- Complete daily work schedules.
- Responsive to the needs of the school principal or facility administrator.
- Ensure established standards of sanitation and hazard-free conditions are maintained.
- Responsible for opening and/or closing buildings in a safe and secure manner. Responsible for locking of exterior gates and entries.
- Monitor scheduled dumpster pickup; immediately reports any deviations to custodial office.
- Practice sound energy management by ensuring that unneeded lights are turned off.
- Perform all routine custodial tasks as a working supervisor.
- Guard against damage to buildings, equipment, furniture, and landscaping by following established policies.
- Open, operate, and secure school facilities outside normal work hours when required.
- Maintain gym floors and refinish yearly.
Personnel Management
- Responsible for general conduct, discipline, personal appearance, and performance of assigned custodial staff.
- Assist in the planning and supervising of the custodial staff. Inspect and evaluate work performed.
- Assume the duties and responsibilities of the head custodian in the absence of head custodian.
- Assist in providing on-the-job training for custodians.
- Assist the head in evaluating the performance of custodians. Recommend disciplinary action when needed.
- Provide good example for a custodial staff.
Inventory and Equipment
- Use custodian equipment and tools in a safe and prescribed manner. Wear required safety equipment and protective clothing.
- Responsible for the care, cleaning, and preservation of equipment and school/facility and campus areas.
- Assist in maintaining an adequate supply of cleaning supplies. Ensure proper use of chemicals and supplies.
- Share responsibility for the care of custodial equipment and supplies.
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise assigned employees.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Manual Trades - Custodial Personnel.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; forklift or hydraulic lifting equipment; hand truck, dolly, and pallet jack; small hand tools; light truck or van
Vision and Hearing: Moderate to maximum
Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, crawling, reaching, and twisting; prolonged standing/walking; climbing, wrist turn, and grasping occasionally
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent walking, climbing ladders and scaffolding; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, twisting, pinching, finger manipulation, overhead reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead;
Lifting: Frequent lifting up to 35 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 45 pounds.
Carrying: Occasionally carrying up to 50 pounds with the assistance of another person, not to exceed 80 pounds total
Environment: Work inside 95% and outside 5%; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to hot and cold temperatures (70O – 95O F), dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, and vibration; work around moving objects or vehicles; may work alone; occasional prolonged or irregular hours
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
